Joe excelled in football, wrestling and basketball as a coach. As a player, he won All County and All Area honors in football. He co-captained the Somerset County Championship team in 1965. As one of the best blocking backs at SHS, he won the Mayor’s Trophy for the outstanding player of the 1965 Thanksgiving Day game. In college at Northwestern College in Iowa, he started every game of his four year career as an inside linebacker. He had the school record for interceptions.
Upon graduation, he returned to SHS as a physical education teacher and coach. He helped Hall of Fame Coaches, Jerry Moore and Campbell Platt mold one of the state’s most successful football programs. As defensive coordinator, SHS’s record was 76-17-1 with two unbeaten seasons.
From 1976-1979 he assisted in coaching the boy’s basketball team. The 1975 team lost in the State Semi-Finals by one point. In 1984, he coached the running backs at Princeton University.
Beginning in 1985, Joe had 10 triumphant seasons as Somerville Middle School’s wrestling coach. His teams were 96-9 with two state champions. He helped fortify the solid foundation for Varsity Coach and Hall of Famer, Dave Kinney.
