Vinnie Furfaro, a 1949 graduate of Somerville High School, collected six varsity letters in football and baseball. His awards are plentiful: three years as All County in baseball and two years as All County in football. Additionally, Vinnie made the All State Group III first team in football as well as baseball. Ultimately, Vinnie won the Yohn Medal for being the Outstanding Senior Athlete.
As a high school student, Vinnie was granted permission by the state to play semi-pro ball with the Somerville Towners and Brownes. He held one of the top punting averages in the country at 40 yards.
On his graduation night, Vinnie signed a pro contract with the Boston Red Sox and reached the Triple A Louisville team before an arm injury ended his career.
Presently, he and his wife reside in Somerville.
