While at Somerville, John accumulated many varsity letters and much recognition. He gained a varsity letter his junior and senior years, 1958-59, in football. John was co-captain of the football team in 1959 when SHS tied North Plainfield for the County title.
In 1959, John received the All County 1st Team Award, All-Area, Central Jersey 1st Team, All State Group IV 2nd team, County and Central Jersey Scoring Leader (85 pts.) and was the COunty and Central Jersey Rushing Leader with 875 yards.
High school basketball afforded John recognition in his position as guard in the ‘59-’60 season when SHS was Somerset County Champs. He also lettered in baseball as captain of the team when SHS was the Somerset County/ Central Jersey State Group IV Champs in 1962.
John received the Yohn Award for best male athlete in the senior class and the Somerville Lions Club Athlete of the Year in 1960.
At Amherst College, John lettered for three years in his positions as halfback. He was awarded All East College Division of the ECAC 2nd Team, was selected 1962 Back of the Week ECAC Small College Div. III two times in 1962, and led the team in rushing and receiving in 1962. Amherst was the Little Three Conference Champ in 1962-63.
College stood out on the diamond at Amherst as well, playing both right and centerfield while batting .359, 4th in Western Mass. John made 1st Team Offense All Western Mass, and All New England 2nd Team in 1963, his team winning the conference title that year.
John also had the school record in the track triple jump with a 41’ 9 ½” jump as a varsity track participant his senior year.
John and his wife Jill currently reside in Whitehouse.
