Somerville Visits Undefeated Arthur L. Johnson

SOMERVILLE, NJ – The Somerville Pioneers (5-1) visit Arthur L. Johnson (5-0) this Friday, kicking off the first of three straight road games to conclude the season.

The Pioneers are coming off a rebound win against Governor Livingston. After dropping their first game of the season the week prior, the Pioneers got back on the right foot, pouring in 40 first-half points en route to a 60-7 victory over the Highlanders.

Leading the offensive barrage for the Pioneers was the quarterback combination of Ryan Kovacs and Jahaln Dabney. Setting the tone early, Kovacs completed four of five drop backs for 78 yards and two touchdowns. Dabney impressed in his time under center, connecting on all six of his passes for 66 yards and a touchdown.

The junior also dominated on the ground rushing four times for 114 yards and two touchdowns, one of which went for 86 yards on a highlight reel play. Ryan Pedrani, Robert Fiorentino, and Kyree Hinton also added rushing scores.

Sophomore Ethan Hilliman had a breakout game, hauling in six passes for 66 yards and a touchdown. Joe Ciempola and Da'Shaun Smith added touchdown receptions as well.

Entering the Week 7 matchup against the Crusaders, the Pioneers have put up 36 points per game while only giving up 17 points per game.

Last week, Arthur L. Johnson won their fifth straight with a 22-11 win at home against Hillside. The Crusaders have conceded more than 20 points in a game just once this season.

On the flip side, the offense has put up an average of 34.6 points per game, with the season high (49) coming in a win two weeks ago at Delaware Valley High School.

Don't expect to see the Crusaders air out the ball too many times on Friday night, with QB Mike Bruno having only attempted six passes all season completing three of them. However, Bruno is a threat on the ground, rushing 41 times for 357 yards and three touchdowns.

The workhorse of the running game, however, is Joe Turek. The senior tailback enters play with 101 touches totaling 825 yards and nine touchdowns. He is coming off an incredibly productive junior campaign as well, in which he tallied 18 touchdowns with 1,045 yards. Turek has scored in every game this season, never failing to rush for less than 140 yards.
