Walker won a total of eight letters in football, basketball, and track.  In football he was a three year starter at wide receiver and running back.  He was All County 2nd team as a sophomore and 1st team as a junior and senior on a team that won two straight sectional titles.  As a junior running back he gained 960 yards and scored 12 TDs.  

Coach Jerry Moore said walker was “a very heady player with speed, quickness, and intelligent running.  Give him a little daylight and he is gone”.  He was 1st team All Conference as a junior and 2nd team All Conference as a sophomore and senior playing both offense and defense.  James was named County Athlete of the Week in Football.  He was 3rd team All Area as a junior.

He lettered for three years and started in varsity basketball.  In track he held the record for the ¼ for 14 years he set as a freshman.  A sprinter with a 9.8 speed in the 100, Walker was 1st team All County and All Conference.  He was Group II State Champ in the 440.  He was also Group II Central Jersey and County Champ.  He had various first place medals for relay races.

In College he attended Ellsworth Junior College and was an ALl AMerican Wide Receiver in football with over 1,000 yards in receiving.  He was offered a scholarship to Illinois State.  Walker had a tryout with the New England Patriots and eventually played for three years with the NJ Rams in a semi-pro league.
