Philip was one of the most gifted athletes of his era at SHS. A football, wrestling and track star, he received All State honors in football and track. He was the team captain in football and made the SHS 50 year football team as the first team left tackle. Phil was the best shot putter in SHS history. He was the State Champ and broke the record at 50 feet. He also threw the discus and javelin.
Phil was sectional champ in wrestling. He only lost one match in his senior year when he hurt his knee in the State Quarterfinals. He went to Iowa State where he played varsity football and varsity track. In 1942, he set the record in the 16 pound shot put event at Iowa State. He joined the Navy and retired as a full Commander.
