Stowe was a late bloomer who earned two varsity letters each in football, wrestling and baseball. He was considered a superb catcher in baseball and was an All State first team Group III selection. Ed rejected a pro contract from the Detroit Tigers to go to the University of Pittsburgh.
Ed went to Pitt and starred as a lineman on the football team. He kick off and played a ean linebacker on defense. He received All American honors on the Grantland Rice teams in 1952 and 1953. He played pro football in the Canadian league with the Saskatchewan Rough Riders.
