Rich Russo, 1959 graduate of Somerville High School distinguished himself in both football and baseball while a student at Somerville. He was one of the fastest, shiftiest backs ever at SHS.
Rich scored 27 points in one game against Springfield Regional, averaging 8.4 yards per carry and 37 yards per punt. He was scoring leader with 94 points, thirteen TD’s and sixteen extra points. Rich won seven varsity letters for football and baseball. He was the first freshman ever to start a game for the varsity baseball team.
His accolades while at Somerville were numerous: Winner of the Pioneer Club, the Sam Yohn Medal, a recognized member of the SOmerset County All-State Team and the Messenger- Gazette’s All Somerset Football Team. He was also a member of the All State First Team, the Newark News Group IV First Team and the Newark News Group All Group First Team. In baseball he was recognized as a member of the Group IV First Team and ultimately given Somerville Amateur Athlete of the Year by Somerville Lions Club.
Richard and his wife Florence live in Raritan Borough.
